What is the best way to tell the axle size so I can get the right size bearings?

Re: Bearing Question.....

anytime i want to replace any bearing, i get the # off the casing, and get parts house to replace it, or crossref to what is now used. i suggest pulling greasecap, wiping enuff gunk off outer surface, maybe even flashlight would help - get the #.
hopefully you've replaced bearings on an axle b4, so i won't mention details in that.

Re: Bearing Question.....

Thanks Ebb... I have done tractor trailer axles b4. It has been a very long time for a small trailer. Couldn't remember if they had numbers on the bearing caings or not. :D

Re: Bearing Question.....

jeez ziggy, a tt bearing is probably big enuff to use as a boat anchor! bet that was fun... just thought i'd mention that you might look into using 'bearing buddies', if you haven't used them b4. its nice to just stick the greasegun on and pumpem back full everynow & then. mine haven't been on that long, but my pop has been running them for 6+yrs and never had any problems.

Re: Bearing Question.....

Can anybody tell me how often to lube/check/grease bearings? I have a 23 foot boat on a tandom trailer. I dont go very far but have not checked the bearings in 8 months. (only owned it for that long) How much would it cost to get all 4 replaced, and do you bring the trailor to the mechanic with the boat on it or not? Excuse the ignorance. Thanks.

Re: Bearing Question.....

well, i check for excess heat on practically every trip to the ramp, by placing my hand on the bearing caps... but then i might forget to ck for a plug in the boat, so you can see how i feel about it ;)
in your case - its time to check them, since you aren't aware of their condition. i've never cared for a boat your size so i won't answ all your ?'s, but i should mention that if you have a bearing overheat/lockup while trailering, probably the best outcome would be a shredded tire/ruined hub! and this kind of thing might lead to loss of complete wheel, fender, axle, with orphaned wheel becoming a UFO to wreak havoc at highway speeds!
