Hi guys, this is my first attempt at pulling powerhead apart and putting back together. The bearings on the crankshaft are tiny little rods, and doesnt look like anything else? Almost like you would space these and hold them with a little grease and nothing else. Went to a marine shop and 1 set of new ones was $75, in a sealed foil packet so I couldnt see what a new set looks like. Ofcourse 1 packet is 1 bearing so 2 packets required. Can I simply get these tiny rods from a bearing place? Is there anything else I need? Any help appreciated.

Peter
Sydney, Australia

Welcome to iboats.

Wow those suckers are pricey! The whole bearing would be called a Needle Bearing and those are bearing Needles. I would think they are outsourced to a bearing company, so it may be worth a try. There should be places in Sydney that specialize in industrial bearings, seals, shafts, and couplers. Try one of those and good luck. I've gone to such places in the past for various bearings and seals used on boat motors, but never for loose needles.

You have to wonder if it's really worth it, I'd think. If it's going to cost you $150 for just those bearings, I wonder if you couldn't just buy another 40 year old 5 horse for about that amount, and get one that runs already.

Just a thought.

Peter.... Those are connecting rod liners and needle bearings. They come as a set (needles and liners) for one rod only, so you would need two if yours are damaged. There are two liners to a rod with thirty (30) needles.

However that price seems quite high to me but considering where you're at, it could be accurate.

They list here for about $53.00 per set. I do have two new ones in stock but have used some of the needles from one set (perhaps some of your needles are good?). What I have is as follows if you cannot locate them on this site or elsewhere.

1 - Complete liner(2) and needle(30) set

1 - Liner(2) and needle(13) set

If interested, contact me at my address below.

Re: Bearing question for 67 model Evinrude 5hp

Thanks guys for your help, will consider my options. Atleast I know there are 30* 2 needles, so im missing some 13 when they fell everywhere on my tiled verandah. Doing it as a project, not just to fix but to learn how it all works. These bloody needles are more expensive than the full set of rings and gaskets, plugs etc combined. I think they jack the price up when they only have a couple left and arent going to reorder. Yes the outboards only worth a tad more than the parts cost!!

Im thinking if I can find the needles will use these, second option to see if a bearing place sells them. Final option will be to buy but last resort on this project. I was probably going to put her in the bin after fixing, I just wanted to see if im capable of it.

Peter
