Bearing carrier retainer nut.

I will be replacing prop shaft oil seals on a pre alpha "R" drive. The torque spec is 150 ft/lbs in an old merc service manual. The online merc manual states 200 ft/lbs. I don't have the tools to check backlash and will be trying to get the cover nut back to where it was. What torque setting should I use? Should I index the cover nut to the housing before unscrewing it , then line up the marks when screwing the big cover nut back in?

If its more than a year or two old you may not be able to unscrew it.drill (2) 1/4 or 3/8 ths holes thru to the SS lock tab, remove the section and then remove whats left of the ring, clean threads, install new ring, tighten to spec.DO NOT drill in the threaded area of the case.

I have only done 2 so I am a rookie but I would go with the manual that covers that drive when you get near the correct torque you will have to stop where the lock tabs line up

I hope you have a good place to hold the drive because it takes a good yank to reach the torque :)

tommays

It's way older than that. The drive is a 73 or 74. Nut and threads look pretty good. Been in fresh water the whole time except 2 months last year when my brothers boat was docked behind my house. The drive is in a vise with the prop shaft up. PB blaster for 3 days now. Hopefully it comes out without drilling.

Re: Bearing carrier retainer nut.

I have 2 Mercruiser service manuals. The old nut was probably set to the old manual at 150 ft/lbs. The updated service manual online shows 210 ft/lbs in the torque table and 200 ft/lbs in the assembly section. I think 150 ft/lbs should be used since I will not be checking backlash or changing shims. It seems backlash would remain the same as long as shims are not changed and torque remains the same. So, how hard do I turn that thing?

Till the torque wrench says 150 :) and the lock tabs line up

Thats why i said you need a good stand you could break the caseing getting to 150 if its not well supported

As long as no bearings were changed the shiming should be fine

You could also put back on the upper and bolt the drive on the boat to hold it with out dammage while you tighten it

tommays

Re: Bearing carrier retainer nut.

Thanks for the advice. The drive will be held in a vise by the skeg while tightening.
