So trying to pull the bearing carrier on my cobra.took off 2 bolts and 2 tabs that seem to hold it in.made 2 threaded rods for my puller, comes out ok for 1/4 inch then gets tight and stops.? Am I missing something, manual is kinda sketchy( seloc).or can I change prop shaft seals without taking the carrier out.

Ditch the seloc manual (they make poor toilet paper and worse manuals)

You probably have corrosion

Heat, penetrating oil and patience. Took me two weeks to get my alpha 1 gen 1 carrier out. Good luck.

So went back at it for a bit today, still no luck and I got alot of torque on it,haven't tried the hot wrench yet cause all aluminum worries me with heat.even after trying to get it out it taps back in easily almost like it's bottoming on something.

In order to help we need to know why it needs to come apart.----Ot either corrosion or damage where those tabs lock it in place.----Or was it full of water ??----Hit something ?-------Any welding done on this gearcase?

Iā€™m in the same situation with two lower drives. According to the manuals it should come out. Have you tried to pressurize the housing to drive it out?

No I haven't tried to pressurize.pretty sure mine is getting caught on a slight edge where those 2 tabs fit in to hold the carrier in.going to Dremel a bit a try pulling again, just haven't got around to it, I will notify of any success.šŸ¤ž

A member here mentioned( damage where the tabs go in)well I took a closer look( pic) and decided to Dremel a bit.it doesn't take much to jam it up because I took off only a minute amount and the drive slid out great.I think that especially if it grabs on one side more it really jams it in the bore.the pic is before dremel

Well----It looks like this unit was run without the thrust washer in place.----There is damage and rub marks that simply should not be there !

Something to remember about DIY ...Jacking off bolts. Use the highest grade of steel bolts. Reason
You do not want to stretch the threads OR the end of the threads pushing deep inside of the parts. Lubricating the threads is also a good idea. I have used jacking pullers and hardened bolts that sounded like a high powered rifle going off in front of me.
If you want to DIY pulling parts off of each other ?
A ...Clam Shell Puller...is a great investment. It will eliminate a great deal of pulling on the bolts unevenly. In tight spaces.

To me it is obvious that this lower unit was run with no thrust washer ( wrong one ?? ) and damaged the precision surfaces.-----Hence the difficulty in a simple job of pulling the bearing carrier.

Great call racerone. I bought a none stock prop for a Alpha 1 drive,

YOU MUST install the supplied Thrust Washer. To prevent damage to the Lower Unit. Power Tech Prop.

All good to know. I don't know that I'd every try to take my salt water used Cobra apart, might be very difficult. I can split the drive but even removing the water pump adapter if it causes a leak would be challenging due to calcium deposits. I do have a spare freshwater unit that needs a rebuild in my garage, I might have this unit done over the winter, so that I have a good spare just in case, but my old Cobra which hasn't even been resealed in almost 20 years still works great, shifts perfect, is quiet, etc. When set up right with quality parts they are very good units. The main thing is the shift cable drag (below 2.5 lbs) and adjustment. Always check the drag on the cable before adjusting, or even installing a new cable. I had bought a new-old stock OEM cable, measured the drag and it was like at almost 4 lbs so I sent it back. The new Sierra cable I bought again as a spare, is like 1.5 lbs, perfect.

It was never run without the washer, I fucked up that surface myself banging it back it after unsuccessfully trying to remove the carrier .my bad.but never was run without the washer. So not so obvious.and had nothing to do with why it wouldn't come out.

Sorry----I was not there looking over your shoulder.----I can only go by pictures presented here.---Typical of running without thrust washer.-----On more than one occasion have I seen mystery damage done on motors.------Good luck with the repairs.

I have an 88 OMC drive and there are 4 bolts holding mine in.

Correct----The older units ( BETTER ) used 4 bolts to hold the bearing carrier.-------In this thread the bearing carrier is positioned with 2 bolts.
