Bearing Buddies and Spindle Nut Tightness

I bought a new hub, complete with bearings and races. After packing the bearings and installing the hub, I tightened the nut and then backed it off until there was no drag, slightly above hand-tight. This gives a slight, almost undetectable, play in the wheel if it is rocked back and forth; If I tighten until the slight play is gone, there is some drag. After a road test, the hub was warm on both inner and outer sides(not hot, though). Is slight play acceptable? Next question: I was told by a salesman that BBs need to be replaced every time they are removed from the hub. Is this true?
