Bayliner w/Volvo aq125 overheating...sometimes?

Hi there, I have a 1986 Bayliner Capri 19.5 foot with a Volvo Penta aq125 and a volvo 270 outdrive. First off, I am new to boating this year so I am learning as I go, aka hoping for suggestions!
Here is the problem, the boat starts up and runs fine once its in the water, usually at a temp of 170-180 degrees. Once on open water and the RPMs increase to above 2500 the temp rapidly (under 2 minutes) spikes to about 250 or until the RPMs are reduced. When idling or proceeding slow or moderately the temp remains just under 180, but under load or pulling a skier, (anything to go fast) increases the temp to dangerous levels. The wierd thing is the quick rate that the engine returns to a normal level if left idling or slowly proceeding . So????
I have eaten though an exhaust bellow, and initially thought this may be the problem...not so. (told you I was new), I do not have much help in the local marine store as they refuse to deal with Volvo- and treat the problems as an "see...they aren't good" instead of helpful suggestions. So I look to you. Those knuckleheads refused to replace my impeller!! I had to take it to a shop an hour away for this service. I had a new impeller installed, new engine bellow put on, new radiator cap, and all the oil changed. I have heard of air getting into the water intake tube from the outdrive.... does this make sense? Whats the easiest way to fix this? Please help me out!! Thanks-

It is quite possible that the hose that goes to the pickupp tube has become disconnected or the aluminum goose neck that it is attached to has rotted away leaving the hose un attached so that it suck up water when the boat is not on plane, and air when you get up on plane.
Just take a look at the back of the pivot hinge
on the back of the out drive ,the hose and goose neck should be visible.
You could also have a worn out raw water pump,
so you might need a re-build kit.
Manifold could be leaking or could be blocked up
with rust or silt.
Welcome to the wonderful world of volvo penta,
no body around here wants to work on them either.
Good Luck, Ed

The water pickup tube runs through the centre of the outdrive pivot, if the pivot bearings are worn it will suck air. There is an 'o' ring seal on both sides of the pickup tube.

Aldo

Ok...kinda stupid question, but what do you mean by the Outdrive pivot? The entire assembly?
...in an open opinion, is it more likely air leaking in, or is it maybe a clog in the waterway? I am about to take the thing apart, tube by tube, but I need to know how to get in the outdrive unit... (again, I reiterate my newness) Thanks for the help so far

The water enters through the grill in the lower leg and passes through the tube (24) and up to the hose connector (3). The seals (22) will leak if the bearing & bushe (23 & 5) are worn (with a 270, they are always worn).

This is the steering pivot. Its easy to check by moving the leg by hand and looking for excessive freeplay.

I strongly reccomend you get a manual and study so that all this info is at hand. Good luck.

Aldo

Re: Bayliner w/Volvo aq125 overheating...sometimes?

TXTripper,
I have the same engine/same outdrive on a 1985 Bayliner. I had mega cooling problems as well. I redid all the seals and o-rings on my outdrive (see diagram from a previous posting). It didn't help. I discoverd that I had a bad antifreeze reservoir cap. Upon replacing it, it help pressure so well that it blew the gasket around my antifreeze coolant pump. Replaced that! Then had my coolant pump rebuilt. Since the freshwater intake system wasn't really the problem, I belive it was the cap not holding pressure. Another posting some time ago suggested putting a section of clear hose between the intake pipe and flex hose (near the steering arm behind the engine) to see if you can detect air bubbles. It worked quite well for him. This is getting long. Let me know.

TXTripper,
We can discuss more over the phone if you prefer (after the 4th weekend). I'll provide you a number if you want.

That sounds really good, I think that I came across the "clear hose" method that you are talking of, that guy had the same excact problem that I do. I did a temporary sealing of that joint connection behind the engine by the steering arm so that it can't take air in there. We'll see if that will work. It would be too easy if thats the case, but my fingers are crossed. I will let you know tomorrow night if that temp seal helped out, if not I would love to have a conversation about it. Did you ever get yours fixed? Was it sucking air in the tubes? Thanks-
TxTripper
