Hi all, newbie here.
Thinking of checking into a boat I saw advertised but had a few questions on it.
Looking at a 1987 Bayliner Capri Bow Rider, 17'.

Wanting to see if anyone would know or know where to find other measurements. Width, depth of boat mainly.

Also anyone have any experiences with this model? Has a 135hp I/O. Won't idle. Been sitting, needs a carb rebuild which I can do myself. Have worked on Mercury a lot so know how to turn wrenches on boats. Looking for likes, dislikes etc.

Chopped glass construction. Poor workmanship. Bayliner does get alot of people out on the water and I guess that's good.

Re: bayliner specs and dimensions???

If taken care for, no problem. and I have a 88 125hp OB..sits for a few weeks in the in salt, still runs fine after an ignition upgrade. Also a 5000# 1977 Saratoga. And anyone bashing Bayliners, with out ever owning one, is way off base. Nothing wrong with them, but like ANY boat, its the upkeep.
THAT SAID..if
its an old OMC outdrive, "run, Forrest, run". Myself? I would run away from a 17 outdrive Bayliner...boat fine, motor/OD? Take a pass..look for an OB...

WELCOME TO I BOATS

just about any question you ever wanted to know about boats has been covered on these forums at one time or another...just hit search....

one of my boats is a 19 foot bayliner capri with a 140 hp w/ alpha 1
bliner boats are prone to wood rot...
but scatty is right....it all depends on the up keep.....

if you go way down low on the forum main page...there is boat manufacturer forums....hit bayliner...there is another forum there....

as for dimentions....try the bayliner home page...and seach brochures....

Re: bayliner specs and dimensions???

Unless very well taken care of and stored, most small boats that old will have wood rot and wet, soaked foam under the deck. Regardless of what bayliner owners may tell you, the bayliners of that era were quite poorly built and as such may be even more prone to rot issues. however, a very well-maintained 20 yr old bliner is better than a poorly maintained Cobalt! So check for soft spots, etc. and check out the engine.

With an engine running well that boat is only worth about $2,500 and with the engine not idleing maybe $1200 or less unless mint or you are certain the engine is easily fixed.

they were a beginner boat, with a lot of stupid owners. the boats were not bad, just the lack of maintenance, no one told them to cover the boat. it's suppose to be an outside toy. thus the rotted.

Re: bayliner specs and dimensions???

Thanks for the replies.
This will be my third boat with my first two being 1977 and 1976 projects.

It ran last summer, then was stored for the winter. I believe the idle problem is old gas that was not properly drained from the carb causing the carb to get gunked up. A carb kit should fix the problem. I have not seen the boat in person yet, and may not. Just contacted the seller by phone and talked with him about the boat.
But now if I do go look at it I know what to look for in the way of common problems with this make of boat.
