I have a volvo 2.4 Penta in a 1983 bayliner have to put it neutral 4 to 5 times sometimes before it starts. Is there a safety switch and where is it?

It is built into the controller, usually a yellow/red wire coming in and out. To test it, jump the yellow/red wires together and see if it solves your problem. But keep in mind, boats were designed to not start in gear for a reason, and that's why there is a neutral safety switch. Before you get back on the water, fix or replace it...don't leave the wires jumped.

Please do as skydive says--don't leave it that way.

I jump-started a guy on the water this year that did NOT TELL ME that his boat starts IN GEAR!

My daughter was almost injured in that one, as she was holding both boats so the
jumped cables wouldn't get pulled off; it could have been very bad!!
His boat caught, but did not start, LUCKILY, and he lurched forward 2 feet.

I told him I was towing him in, and that was it; no more trying to give him a jump!!!!!

Insttech1 been there done that and the owner's wife of the boat being jumped got her hand smashed between the nose of the boat and the trailer winch. It was nasty. At that time I was an emt and had a med kit with me. I could see bones broken in the distal palmar and one of the proximal phalanx was clearly broken and displaced. She went into shock in the back of their truck just as we got her to the Bullfrog Clinic. Once back at the ramp the owner swore he never touched the shifter. I could see wires under it obviously not belonging to the shifter. I left and went back to the clinic to see how she was doing and gave a statement to the officer taking the report. I made sure they knew why that boat moved. Sheesh. Can you imagine a skier in the water and somebody starts a boat in reverse?
