I just bought a 94 bayliner. It has a 4.3 liter engine that I think is locked up. Would it be better to just buy a new engine or rebuild? Any rebuild tips. Also is there any difference in a S-10 4.3 liter engine and the engine that is in my boat. The engine in the boat says GM right on top. Any help would be great. Thanks

Re: bayliner engine

Rhyno,

True, your engine was manufactured by GM. It's relationship to the S-10 engine ends at the GM logo.

The marine engines contain many specialty parts that are not on automotive engines. To name a few, the following are different.

Casting (freeze) plugs.
Carburetor
Camshaft
Valve Springs
Exhaust Manifolds
Starter (sealed)
Alternator (sealed)
Water Pump

If you want to rebuild it, fine. Just use marine components. There are many fine reman. and new engines available in the aftermarket. You may even find some on this iboats board.

djohns19,

Thanks for the help. Do you have any suggestions on a manual or something to give me the guidance I need to rebuild. I am not for sure what is wrong with it and I would only like to replace the parts that are bad. I dont think I can afford the price of a new motor. I have another boat to use while I work on the bayliner. I bought it as a project to fix up. It needs the motor work and some seats but other than that it is in excellent condition. Not bad for a few hundred dollars I guess. Also where would be the cheapest place to order parts or rebuild kits. Thanks for your help.

Just to add to the above... Remove the outdrive (hit the starter)to make sure its not locked up instead of the engine.
