I have a Bayliner 2858 Ciera w/ 350 Mag MPI Bravo II. I cruise at 20 mph @ 3600 rpm yet the Bayliner brochure lists 25-26 mph with the same engine and a Bravo III. The boat weighs about 8200 pounds. My question is whether a Bravo II can make that much difference in cruising speed. Thanks.

Gregand am properly

Re: Bayliner 2858 Ciera

There are other things besides the drive. Is the bottom clean or does it have a buildup of paint on it? Has your boat gained extra weight by having things stored in every available space? Is your prop aluminum? BIII'S have ss props. That's a heavy boat to have only 300 H.P. The specs in the book are usually with two people,1/4 tank gas,
and no water. Hope I helped, Tom :)

Thanks for the response Tom. My bottom is spanking clean. The boat is loaded lighter than the 4 people, full tank of full Bayliner tests with. I can't believe a Bravo III drive would make that much difference. I do, however, have aluminum props. Thanks.

That is a FAQ, it seems manufacturers claims are in absolutely ideal conditions. Actuals fall a bit shy usually. What rpm do you get at WOT?

Greg - you can probably get "some" improvement by playing with the prop but that ain't the real problem. The 350 just does not have enough umph to do the job.

I had a 8,000 lb 27 1/2' Bayliner flybridge with a 350 & Volvo outdrive. After much playing with props I finally got it up on a plane (just me and 1/4 tank). Mine waddled all over the water and was a bit%h to pull down the road despite a triple axle trailer. I sold it six weeks before Andrew ripped through my neighborhood and was not sorry to see the buyer pull it out of my driveway.

You need a 454 for decent performance. If by chance you could get it up to 5,000 rpm I doubt that the 350 would last long.

I did a little search on them, nice boats. I'd stick with that prop for now and try some fine tuning to get your rpm's up. All the ads. I saw read about a 17 to 20 mph cruise and from 26 to 31 mph top speed with the 7.4. Check your timing, tune up, oils, filters, inspect prop for any damage and do you trim your leg up when you're at WOT? That all makes a difference. You're not far off the mark if at all.

Gregorymit
I dout the other outdrive will make any difference in speed. It may hold up better. Bottom line is you have a very heavy boat and only 300 HP. I ran a basic formula for boat speed assuming this is a modified V boat and top speed is 31.9 MPH. Figures I used was for boat at 8200lb 2 men at 200 each 50 gallons osf gas and 100LB of gear. At 20 MPH is your boat even up on plane?? How do you have the motor trimmed?? Stainless steel prop can gain you 2 to 3 MPH.

Re: Bayliner 2858 Ciera

SolLittle, Magster65, and boatist,

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm now running an 18.75 X 17 wheel and it's the closest I've come. I cruise at about 18 knots with 3 people and 1/2 tank of gas, and dive gear and WOT is about 4400 which is close to the listed 4600-5000. That's probably as good as it gets except maybe I could lose some diameter; any less pitch I think would really slow me down. I'd rreally like to hear from someone with the 2858 and 350 MAG MPI BRAVO III to see if thet get performance anywhere close to Bayliner's specs.

Greg

Re: Bayliner 2858 Ciera

Gregorysmit
At what speed does your boat come up on plane????

When you say cruise do you mean 3600 RPM???

I would not cruise at a speed below planing speed, as you will use a lot more fuel. Your best fuel mileage will be as soon as reach clean planing speed, and I would cruise at that speed. Only things you can do reduce planing speed is lighten boat or add trim tabs.
Good Luck and enjoy your summer.

The Bravo III with the dual prop may make a difference in speed as mid range. Check with both VOVO and MERC and see what they have to say. Big dollars to change, takes a lot of fuel saving to pay for.
