Battery switch

I think I have made and expensive mistake. My tacho stopped working and in searching previous posts learned that:

1. The tacho signal is derived from the voltage regulator
2. The VR can blow when the battery is disconnected.
3. Some battery switches disconnect when switching from one battery to another.

I left the auxilliary battery on to work the automatic bilge. I started the motor on the main battery and then switched over to both batteries to charge the auxillary. Has this blown my VR?

If so this is an expensive lesson.

Re: Battery switch

It may have, some switch can be turned because of a built in safety connection and some can't

Re: Battery switch

It is possible, see if the engine is charging the battery, by testing voltage before starting, & after, it should go up. Your bilge pump should be hooked to the aux. battery directly, if you leave the boat in the water through a float switch, don't even go through the switch. Good Luck, Joe

Re: Battery switch

I will wire the float switch directly to the auxilliary battery in future.

I get 12.45 volts at the battery whether the engine is running or not. I guess I should get about 14v when running? Looks like the regulator to me.....

Re: Battery switch

Yep. Should read 13volts or more with the engine running. If it's not the regulator that it at least is something to do with your charging circuit.
