Battery Required

I need to get a battery for a 1986 50 hp, 3-cylinder, Merc.
I can't trust what's there now. It's shot and I don't know if it was ever the right one.
What battery should this engine take?
When jumping with the car, the starter still has a hard time spinning. Perhaps the starter is on its way out as well.
Because I am trouble shooting the ignition, this battery and starter is taking a beating.
Thanks,
J

Re: Battery Required

What battery do you have? What makes you think it is shot?

You need to troubleshoot your starter circuit. Look in the Engine FAQs for "Outboard won't start".

Re: Battery Required

I've been wasting my time trying to save this engine.
It won't start. It won't even fart.

I have been through ignition problems, cleaning connections, correcting seating HV leads in coils, diagnosing a failed switch box.

So, this engine has been cranking its starter for the past week with no break or help from the charging circuit. I have recharged it twice and am now jumping it from my car to spin the starter. The starter is also taking a beating as the engine won't fire. The starter could also be ready for recycle.

I am finally ready to troubleshoot fuel delivery and ignition timing and I can no longer spin the starter. I need to get reliable spin or else I have no hope of fixing this pig.
