right now my pontoon has 1 marine batt (cant remember brand) but id like to add another batt for extended siting/swimming/etc stuff. should i buy a starter and a deep clycle or 2 of the same kind of batt's. id mainly be running stereo and lights when sitting. now i also need some kind of switch to switch the 2 batt, anysuggestion on what brand? will my 89 40hp evinrude keep both charged or should i just keep the switch set to the starting batt when running then when anchored set the switch to the other? i basicllhy worried about being stuck on the lake with a dead batt

Re: Battery questions

your 89 rude does all it can do to keep the starting battery charged, i would recommend adding the biggest deep cycle you can fit/afford and putting it on a 1/2/off/both switch. Crank the battery using your existing battery, switch to battery #2 (the deep cycle when at anchor) Cranking the engine or charging in both won't put much charge back on that deep cycle. You would be best served to put the deep cycle on charger/maintainer when you're at back at home and before you go out. If you have an amplifier connect it to battery #2, if its just normal electronics they should be able to run a very long time off a nice big deep cycle.

Re: Battery questions

thats pretty much what i figured. i plan on adding a sub to the audio system when i re-deck the boat at the end of the year, will the deep cycle be ok for that?

Re: Battery questions

yes just don't depend on the rude to charge that deep cycle if you drain it. If you're adding the sub and it happens to be free-air make sure you completely seal it to avoid cancellation.

Re: Battery questions

well if i drain the deep clycle all the way when im out its not a big deal i just wont have any tunes on the wasy back but at least ill be able to start it. i plan on building a sub box where there is a spot for cooler storage under one of the seats. it seems by your name youre the audio guy here, i was goin to build a ported box so i can run a smaller amp for effiency(sp?) reasons is there a problem doin this for a boat? ive been doin car audio/video for the last 6 years and for the past 8 months home theather, but im totally new to boat stuff
