Re: Battery not charging
While recently out boating I noticed that there where some faults apearing with my out board which is a 2004 merqury 60hp 4 stroke motor.
I was pointed in this direction by a mate to get on this sight,I am not 100 per cent on how to go about testing the charge circuit to trouble shoot to find the part or parts that are not working, It would be very helpful to me if someone could help me sort this drama out
So ill assume the motor does start right up with a new or charged battery, correct?
If so then your issue would lie between the battery charge coils in your stator assembly, or your rectifier/regulator. You should have a red and yellow wire coming from your stator down to your regulator rectifier. If you could get a hold of a multimeter (digital or analog) with a DVA function adaptor (or built in) you could test the voltage output coming from your battery charge coils. Simply slip in two paper clips and attach your red/black meter leads to these two wires and crank the motor (disconnect your safety lanyard so the motor doesnt fire off).. voltage should be between 100-300v. If everything checks good there.. go to your regulator rectifier and you should see another set of wires coming out of it (other than the red/yellow-- i forgot the colors for these). Test those wires the same way, and you should get a reading of 9-15v..
Im pretty sure either of those readings will be wrong, and according to your readings, you should replace the stator assembly (since the charge coils are built in underneath and attached to it) or the rectifier/regulator. Hope that helps some..
