I read with interest a recent post by mchin related to wire gauge size for a trolling motor. I have searched this post and not found a similar question.
I am mounting a trolling motor at the rear of a 12' jon boat and mounting the battery up front to help disperse weight. My question is what type of link up do I use for the power from the battery to the trolling motor. My trolling motor has a round squeeze type clamp for positive/negative which fits snugly over the post. Is there a product that I can buy like battery posts which can be mounted in the rear of the boat so the trolling motor can be hooked up?

I don't want to change the connections on the trolling motor. I hope this is not a stupid question but I cannot find what I am looking for at a typical auto parts store. The post by mchin answered what gauge wire to run to the rear of the boat.

The trolling motor is the only thing hooked up to the battery. Thanks

Re: Battery mount for trolling motor

You need "ring terminals" for the cable pair running from the battery to the stern of the boat. Ring terminals at the battery connect to the wing nut terminals. You are done then on that end. At the stern you need two "Binding Posts" (one red and one black). Again, ring terminals connect the stern end of the cable pair to the binding posts. OBSERVE POLARITY (red = pos, black = neg). Binding posts (terminal studs) look like this. The clips on the motor cable then connect to the binding posts. Make sure the binding posts are of side that can handle the current required by the motor.

thanks that makes sense, will those still work with the butterfly nut on the battery end and some crimping on the power end? I don;t want to screw anything up.

Don't understand your question. You install ring terminals on each end of the cable. The ring terminals on the bow end fasten with wing nuts on the battery. The stern end of the cable attaches to the binding posts with the provided nuts. You then clip your troller cable to the binding posts.
