AS A RULE HOW FAR FROM THE GAS TANK (3 GALLON) SHOULD THE BATTERY BE PLACED, I HAVE MADE A WOODEN BOX WITH TOP FOR THE BATTERY, SO IT IS ENCLOSED.

WOOLY BUGGER,

I do not know if there are USCG regulations for this. The US Coast Guard Website might be of some help.

Common sense would tell us that it really doesn't matter. If the battery and fuel tanks are in good condtion, neither should present a problem with the other.

On the other hand, if the battery is throwing sparks because of loose connections, etc. then yeah-it's a problem to be close.

At the recent boat shows, I was looking for ideas for my current project. Some of the boats I saw had the battery area within inches of the fuel tank and others were several feet away. There was no rhyme nor reason for eithers placement. I think the boat builders put them where they want them relative to weight distribution and packaging.

I do not, personally, have a problem with a battery in close proximity to a fuel tank. But, I'm not going to let either cause problems!

i hand built 2 boats so far that have fuel tanks & batteries.. i couldn't find anything in the coast guard lit.. even called & recieved lit. from aybc ( ??? ) or abcy (??) a yacht builders assco.. nothin' either...but not sayin' there's not,, tho in either case... in both boats the tank & batt. are very close together... i installed rubber terminal end cap booties on the batt terminals & applied ''liquid tape '' to / on the fuel tank electric sending unit wire end terminals, also .. iam a very cautious person especially when comes to being blown up !! an i feel safe with what i done...

my battery is right up against my fuel tank and i am assuming it is all factory
my battery used to have a strap holding it in place i have since put the battery in a plastic battery box i picked up at canadian tire for abotu 6 bucks
it is a much cleaner look and keeps the battery tucked away from any flying objects when the fish are comming in

The wooden box is probably not the preferred method of housing your battery. You can buy a new plastic battery box for about $ 10. Plastic doesn't soak up water or gas like wood does. But more important; the battery and fuel tank must be secured to the bottom of the boat so they don't tip over or fly against each other in heavy seas.

Plastic will hold up to battery acid a lot better than wood will too.

I would definitely get a plastic battery box.
