battery dying

Hi to all. I have a 2008 50hp tlr 2 stroke yamaha outboard. I have a problem that if I leave the battery to the motor hooked up the battery dies. I took the boat back to the dealer last year and watched them hook it up and test it and there is no draw on the battery from the motor. I have only the starting battery hooked to the motor. All other electronics are tied to 2 other batteries. If I disconnect the negative cable of the motor from the battery, no problem. Battery stays fully charged.

I have a hard time believing that everyone with a yamaha has to disconnect a cable to keep battery from dying. Any insight on this problem? This last one makes me mad cause I used the boat on tues, didn't disconnect the battery, and fri. it was dead. I also had the dealer check the charging system of the motor and it was operating perfect.

Thank you.

Re: battery dying

either the rectifier is failing or the keyswitch has an issue.
or someone has tied into the ign switch red lead with something.

Would either of these show up in a draw test? When I watched them do it the tester would lite up when I turned the key switch. Same with the trim. It's still under warranty, is my next move take it back to dealer with a fully charged battery and tell em to test it in a few days after battery has been connected. Something is definitly not right. 45 min. drive to dealer. But i definitly want if fixed. Is there a way to test the rectifier? Thanks

Re: battery dying

current draw is a simple test, dissconect the - cable, attach an ammeter between the cable end and the battery terminal and simply look at the meter.
0amps means no draw, a leaking diode in a rectifier may be around 800mA.
some ECU's on EFI engines draw current anytime the battery switch, which you should have, is on.
some radios, fishfinders and speedometers have memory circuits that will draw 800mA to 1A.

Re: battery dying

No arch when disconnecting. I didn't watch them use a meter of any sort rodbolt. Looked like same test but the tester just lights up when there is a draw.

I took the boat to dealer today, which is an hour away. The called me a little later and said same thing, no draw from motor. Explained how it has been draining. Guys says ok. Calls back 2 mins later says my battery is bad. O.K., that's a possibility. I told him this is the second battery the motor has done it to. And why last year when I winterized everything, I pull the batteries and store them in the basement, bring it out 3-4 months later hook it to motor, cranks right over fire's right up. I used this battery all this season, as long as I disconnect the neg. cable no problem. The one time I forget less than 5 days later battery is dead. So I told the dealer to hook up a new battery to the motor, let it sit a few days and test the battery again and see if it's still fully charged. That's where I stand now.

This is a whole lot of stuff not making sense. I just winterized the boat/motor yesterday, haven't used it for 4 weeks, hook battery up still seems fully charged, turned motor right over and fired it right up. A bad battery I may have, but this motor is killing it. So we will see what happens, I will update when I hear. Thanks for all the replies.:)

Re: battery dying

Update:

Picked boat up. Invoice read;

Tested battery with microvat, battery tested bad. Inspect gauges and wire harness, found memory wire for optional gauge pull a 60 milla amp draw, disconnect memory wire, re-test- no draw.

Hope that's the end of my problem. Just kind of makes me mad they were so fast to say the first time I took it there after I had just bought it there wasnt anything drawing.

Thanks for replies.

Re: battery dying

you're right this motor was damaging your batteries. you can't keep discharging a starting battery it makes them weak before there time.shop should have found this right off thr bat. what was memory wire connected to?

Re: battery dying

it didn't say, I picked boat up after hours and they mailed invoice to me.
I didn't talk with them.

I was very displeased with the way they handled this and one other problem, someone forgot to put the tach pull on the right setting when they hooked that up as well. RPMs wouldn't go over 3000 no matter what, and after ordering a Flat prop for it with no change, it took me and my local marine mechanic to figure out. Dealers are quick to take your money, but when u have a problem, they are don't want to hear it. Owner/son who sold me the motor told me the first time I took it back to them there was absoulutly nothing on the motor that could cause a draw. And he's been thru the Yamaha training courses:eek:
