Battery charging problem

I have a 1985 Merc 115hp inline 6 that the charging system does not appear to be working.Hooked up a volt meter across the battery while running the motor and voltage does not go above normal battery voltage.I have replaced the stator and rectifier so far,the stator was replaced for running problems and the charging wires on the old stator were shot so I replaced the rectifier at the same time.Is there anything else in the circuit I need to check? Thanks.

Re: Battery charging problem

So what you are saying, is that the new rectifier is not putting out any juice to the battery?

Sounds like one of your new parts may be faulty, or the install did not go quite right.

You didn't by chance hook the battery up backwards, for even a second, did you? That will fry a rectifier in a heartbeat.

Re: Battery charging problem

Never hooked up the battery backwards, resistance readings for the stator windings and the rectifier look good according to the book.Got a message back from CDI(stator) and they said that with a CDI stator I may not see more than 12 volts out of it except at 5000rpm's.So maybe it is working correctly. Can I remove the red + lead from the rectifier and check the output with the motor running to see what voltage I am getting.CDI said I need an ampmeter to test it due to the low current the stator puts out.

Re: Battery charging problem

If that is true about the CDI stator, I won't be buying one. I am planning on replacing the stator on my 135 pretty soon. Guess I'll have to go with Mercury ($$$$$) parts.
