Hey all, Hope someone can help me out here.....what is the difference between a regular battery charger & a "on-board" charger, such as a minnkota 220. Also if someone can tell me if this is a bad configuration: 1 (starting/deep cycle battery) for motor & depth finder) 2nd battery) trolling motor, radio & lights. If this is a bad mix. please suggest how to reconfigure.

Thanks

Re: battery chargers

On board charger are mounted in the boat and wired to your battery. If your have two batteries then your want a charger that will charge both batteries. All you need to do is plug in on board charger to shore power and it will charge your batteries. All on board charger I have see are Smart automatic chargers. They will fully charge without over charging and can be left connected with out damage.

Regular charger is like you would use for your car. It is portable and can be hooked up to charge a battery. Some are dumb manual charger and can overcharge a battery but can also get Smart Automatic chargers. They are designed to charge one battery at a time.

Two batteries on board. How you wire is personal preference but I like to wire so everything needed to run the boat is wired to the starting battery. Also important saftey gear. As an example you have been fishing all day and your trolling battery is dead. On the way back home you hit something and are taking on water. I would really like my GPS and VHF radio to be connected to my good starting battery so I can put out a Mayday and tell them I am sinking my postion is. Would also like Bildge pump and blower to be wired to good starting battery.

Starting battery charged by motor I would wire navigation lights, horn, compass, Bilge pump, bilge blower, GPS, VHF radio, depth finder, winsheild wiper.

Trolling battery not charged by motor.
Trolling motor, livewell pumps, stereo, downriggers, flood lights.

Re: battery chargers

I don't believe my motor (1995 Johnson 90hp) has an alternator/generator to charge the starting battery...also what are your thoughts on using a dual purpose battery?

Thanks for input

Re: battery chargers

I have never seen a 90HP electric start motor that did not have battery charging circuit. Some are not true alternators but do charge the battery. On a 90 HP I would expect at least a 9 amp charger. Most are built into the flywheel.
To find out with a volt meter check your starting motor battery voltage then with water going to your motor start the motor and check the voltage again with motor running at 1000 RPMs. If the voltage go above 12.6 volts then you have a charging circuit.

To start and run a 90HP I like the idea of a dual purpus battery. It will have plenty of MCA to start your 90HP

Re: battery chargers

So how does it send the charge to the battery? Thru the same wires it uses to start the motor?
