battery cables reversed

Hello,<br />I have a 96 Johnson 90 hp. The battery cables were accidentally, reversed, and quickly <br />corrected. Apparently not quickly enough as now the charging system does not seem <br />to be working. What have I damaged?<br />Thanks

Re: battery cables reversed

I would check the rectifier first. I think they are especially sensitive to reverse polarity.

Thanks, standing at the rear of the engine, where will I find the rectifier?

Re: battery cables reversed

Trent, I was unable to find anything that looked like your photo. I checked the resistance of the stator's two brown wire connection, and there is no resistance. I then checked for continuity, on each of the two brown wire connection of the stator to ground, and found no continuity. It would seem to me, if there is no resistance in the stator, that would indicate a short to ground.

I believe the rectifier on your motor is a rectangular shaped part on the top of the back side of the motor partially under the flywheel.

I am not sure of the test procedure but this is normally the first part to fry. I believe the part is around $150 new but can be found used for around $50 with a little searching.

Remember rule #1 with electronics....."Give it what it wants, if it don't work, pitch it"<br /><br />Start the engine > check for a/c volts at the stator leads > if the stator leads are supplying a/c and there is no output from regulator = bad regulator. I don't have a schematic for that year. Are you sure the stator leads are brown? Not yellow?

Yes, Schematic. I am referring to the stator wires to the power pack.

Why are you checking the stator wires to the power pack? (just curious) do you have no spark?<br />Oh I'm sorry, are you aware there is more than one stator?

Re: battery cables reversed

Am I checking the wrong thing? After charging with a charger, I am getting 12.57 volts at the battery with engine off. Once started, the voltage drops to 10volts, and continues to slowly drop while running. until it will no longer start the engine. Should I be checking the yellow wires resistance?

yup....actually you should be checking the yellow ones for a/c while running....
