Merc 1987 70hp 3 cyl. I was doing some work to the tilt trim unit and I accidentally installed the battery backwards.
I energized the ignition and bumped it over a couple of times on the key while testing for power to the tilt trim.
The motor never started, and I only bumped the starter. I am waiting for some parts so I can't try to fire it up. I am worried that the reversed polarity has done some damage.
Any comments?

Thanks

You probably burned the rectifier out but the engine should still run.

Yep fried the rectifier. Did the continuity test then tested it's DC output.
Bought a 35 amp full wave bridge rectifier from an electronics wholesaler for $3 (merc part was about $60). I had to change the ring terminals to female flat style and fabricate a bracket, but that only took 10 minutes or so.
Lots of juice going into the battery now!

Thanks to all who replied.
