Battery and VRO

Hello again,

I have a 1992 Johnson 60hp VJ60TLENE. I had some issues with the rectifier and I?m replacing it. My question is can I use a maintenance free battery with this motor? I believe it?s an unregulated alternator, so I?m worried about destroying the battery or worse. The battery I?m using to start is a Deka dual purpose. I would rather be safe then sorry so if I need to buy a new battery I would appreciate recommendations. Also last summer I discovered a VERY small leak in the oil line going to the VRO. I put tape on it just to get me through the day, as time went on I forgot to fix it and never had any problems, but just looking at it now I decided to fix it a bit little better, so in my best ?redneck engineering? I put just a drop of super glue on it. Does anyone think this will be a problem? Again the leak is very small but I don?t want air to get in there. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

You don't want to have any possibility of air leaking into either the oil line or the gas line; that can cause the engine to run lean and damage the engine. It is worse when you have an air leak in the oil line because you have the risk of inadequate lubrication.

Unregulated rectifiers look like the one shown here:

Sceptics would say there is no such thing as a maintenance free battery!

If you do have an unregulated rectifier as illustrated I would suggest a battery that can be topped up when necessary as there is very likely to be some water loss.

BUT the parts catalog only lists what I take to be a regulated rectifier #63 in THIS DIGRAM

You are risking the destruction of a perfectly good engine for the cost of a couple feet of oil line. That is not "engineering" -- it is engine abuse. Replace the hose. If its broken in one place it is probably broken or about to be broken in others.
