Batteries inside the doghouse?

I am doing some plotting/scheming and thinking ahead about the location of my batteries. Depending on where I put them it will impact my deck structure and doghouse build.

Anyway, it crossed my mind this morning that right in front of the Merc might be a good spot for my batteries. My question is this...

Can the batteries be located inside the doghouse along with the Merc?

If it is ok must they also be housed by a battery box?

Or, must they be isolated outside of the doghouse?

Thanks in advance guys!

Sure, batteries can be in the engine compartment. Several boat manufacturers have a shelf with batteries in front of the engine.

Cool, thanks Don! Much appreciated!

I just didn't want to invite some sort of McGiver action on my Islander ya know....

With the stern weight bias in an I/O I'd like to see the battery more forward.
Doesn't amount to a whole lot but every little bit helps. If your redoing may be a good time to try to improve the balance/weight reduction.

Good point!

I actually have worked it so my main tank is midship and the reserve is just ahead of the main. Getting those tanks where they are now should really help with the balance issue. Having said that I am ok with the batts being stern side.

Thanks!

Ayuh,... I don't see a problem with yer idea,...

Just so long as the batteries are covered with a non-conductive material, so there's No chance of an arc, if somethings dropped on 'em....

What size (diameter) battery cables are you using over what length from battery to starter?

Whatever is currently on my Merc V6

over what length from battery to starter?

Well, batteries will be sitting right in front of the motor so I am thinking a few feet or so.

if you can put a battery under the hood of a car you can put one in a dogbox.

Yah, that is what I initially thought too, but I wanted to be sure. Some stuff is different in marineland, eh!
