Bassackward boat race today!!

New England / Buzzards Bay members may wish to watch the 12th annual Bassackwards race ;from the Kingman yacht club in Pocassett ma arround Cleavland ledge and back . the informal 2.5 hr amateur sailboat race ends with a live band on Bassett island in the harbour ....race starts at noon band plays 3-6 . I plan on taking picture to post later ...peter

I would like to see that! We have raced dingys backwards, but have never seen sailboats do this. Is it possible to sail backwards or are they motoring?

Driving boats backwards is not a good idea. Besides the obvious (water over the transom) there are other problems. I once had my gearcase stuck in reverse and had to motor two or three miles back to the marina in reverse. I took it slow so as not to get any water over the transom, I still almost sank my boat because scuppers are not designed for traveling in reverse. My bilge was filling with water through the drain holes for my scuppers.

We have a blind dingy race at the marina every year. An obsticle course is set up and the fun begins. The captain is blindfolded with a navigator on the bow. Rubber boats are recommended.

Not shure of the origin of the name , maybe out of the mayhemat it's start ?? It is an amature race ; but forwardin direction , lol I'm sorry to say I did not make it out - my tow rig quit working enrout ...maybe Black Snow Slide Made it , he is the member who told me about it .
