bass survival with lures

What do you all think is the possibility a bass will survive after breaking a line and swimming off with the lure in its mouth? In sixty years of fishing, I've seen such break-offs three times, one time being my stupid mistake that let a big bass get around a pier post. I have conducted funerals for many bass that died from swallowing somebody's wormy hook or, once, that had obviously ripped loose from a hook in its gills. I've also caught many bass mutilated by being wrapped in a line, missing an eye, big bites out of its fins and so on. So obviously they are pretty tough. But I have never found a dead bass with a lure in its mouth, either in weedy lakes where they presumably could get entangled or in rock & sand bottom lakes where they couldn't. This query is sort of an informal research project. I always feel I need to comfort people in my boat who let the fish get under the keel.

Re: bass survival with lures

I doubt they die unless their gills are severly damaged which is rare. I've caught one that had a 5.0 worm hook coming out his rear that he had passed through his system another had about 2 feet of line sticking out his throat with the lure still in his stomach and he was quite healthy. I've also lost fish in small ponds and came back days later to find the lure floating near the bank. If they they can shed a lure with you trying everything you can to keep him pinned, throwing a loose lure is gravy.

spots

Thanks, Spots. In one evening on Lake Osoyoos in Washington State, I had five smallmouth bass toss my worm back into the boat. Snippy little guys, huh? Our daughter, 3 years old at the time, thought it was the funniest thing she ever saw Daddy do.

------------
Today's tip: Don't forget to set the hook.

It had been widely theorized and believed that a hook stuck in a fish mouth give rot quickly and fall off. I've caught fish with a worm hook in still in it's throat also.

I think they are designed to corrode after a few days for just this reason

Years ago when I was a very young boy we fished a pond in Pennsyvania.I had a catfish break my 4 year old 6 lb test with a popper on it.I went back a couple of days later and lost my Mepps spinner in a tree, lol.I caught a grasshopper, tied my line around its body, chucked it in there and I'll be damned that catfish took that grasshopper. My line got caught around the popper, and I got him in.I was amazed, that hook on the popper was almost desintagrated already. It was corroded and I left that fish go.He deserved it.But,I did get my useless popper back.

That reminds me of a story.

One of our cats swallowed a lure once. I had noticed the rod without a lure on it. I didn't think much of it at the time but I wondered where it went...

Weeks later, the cat was yowling and pulsing (for lack of a better word) in the litter box and then took off like a ball of fire was chasing it. I corralled the poor thing after about ten minutes of this and noticed fishing line hanging out its rear! I pulled on it, got a lot of line out, the cat shortened up some (really- not kidding, but it sounds funny telling it) so I decided to clip it off and hope for the best. The cat stopped running, and that was the last I saw of the issue.

Thinking about it after washing my hands, I fetched my fishing rods. Somehow it had swallowed a grey ghost off the rod (probably tasted like fish!) along with some line. Not sure when, but it got the streamer, and managed to break off and swallow a couple yards of 8# test, and then break it off!

The cat was about 14 years old when it died of old age- 10 years+ after this incident.

Lure-hooked fish generally don't die with the lure still in them- deep-hooked bait-lured fish do die often according to studies.

But fish are tougher than cats I think. Uh-oh, now that reminds me of another story...
