Even if you lose the fish Crabby, ya gotta love it when ya get at least one 'BAM' and the rod bends and the drag sings. :)

I use a thing called a mimicing minnow. It works great for bass. When it swims the tail wiggles back and forth. Sounds like you needed a stinger hook tied to the tail.

sounds like you had fun! ... very cool.

I can't say I use them 'alot'. I use Zoom salty and regular Flukes and the new Storm Rattle WildEye Split Tail Minnow for bass and walleye with the occassional northern and musky hits from time to time.

Zoom Salty Super Fluke
Re: bass love a good ride

yeah, i sure am gonna start usin' them for now on..

i sorta kinda tried to use a stinger hook on things especially on my secret weapon,, a berkley 8 in sandworm.. which unbeknownced to me they don't make anymore.. but found a place that still has them an bought 300 of 'em..

they really attract bass an get 'hits' all-the-time,, but since they're so long,, it's hard to tell when to set the hook ..sometimes 2 minutes pass an they still have'nt takin' up the hook when i FINALLY set the hook..

would love to incorporate a 'stinger' with these,, but everthing around here HAS to tex-rigged .. even the hook eye has gotta be buried..

the minni's i was usin' were the luckstrike 3X brand.. exactly like the 'zoom super flukes' as shown.. these 3X's,, are made of a very unusaul soft plastic unlike i've never seen before..

thanks tho,, i'll try an come up with a tex-stinger even if i hafta use a saddle needle & line to thread..

Re: bass love a good ride

When I was a kid, my freinds dad was a tornament fisherman in KY. Every year he would win loads of tackle and dump it up in the attic. He had a large supply of silver plactic minnows. We tried them out in the shallows of the creek and caught bluegill all day long. So much that we began our own tornament with the gang. I remember each of us catching up to 90-100 a day wading about 2-3 miles of the creek. The minnow was only 1.5" long, one small look and not very durable. Their color was a dull gray/silver. That the most fish I ever caught in a day. That also when we stopped diggin for live worms. Today I rarely use the ones on the market cause I've yet to have the same results as the crude smaller version we used in the mid 70"s.

Oj

The ones Barlow has pictured are used dropshotting here. The Bass are deep during the day and this is the ticket.

In the evenings and mornings I'll use a 3" softbodied swimbait that looks like a minnow with a swimtail. I'll hold the rodtip up with a slow retrieve so it's just under the surface.

The most consistant Bass bite for me is a brown pepper tubebait. The minnows come in second. Floating broken back Rapala runs third.

crab bait, rig one pole with a tube and another with that minnow.

This has surely been my best year fishing. I've been having some consistant tournament sized catches.

Re: bass love a good ride

hey crab bait, you ever tried rigging your senko's wacky style? with no weight, they should take a good 15 to 20 seconds to sink 6 feet.

Just stick a 1/0 or 2/0 hook straight through the middle of the egg sack part of the worm, cast it out, but don't retrieve it; let it sink. Every 5 or 6 seconds give your rod tip the slightest twitch. strikes on this rig are v-e-r-y soft, though, so watch your line closely. If it moves or go slack at all, take in the slack and set the hook.

Sounds weird, but try it in the shallows where you can see what the bait is doing--the high salt content causes it to sink slowly, horizontally, and when you twitch it looks incredibly like a fish.

Also, try stuffing a tube jig with a jingle bell (yes, a christmas bell) and/or a piece of an alka-seltzer tablet. No joke!

pretty neet..!! i never had tried 'wacky style' ... cause everthing still needs a tex-rig ( hidden hook ) but i'll sure will try it tho,, next time out..

have tried the alka-seltzer before.. can't say it worked.. even used berkley 'bubble ups'.. but never even heard of a ' jingle bell'

hafta try that one when nobodies lookin' :)

no MELLOW,, no-one sells 'em.. anyway,, it's gotta be artifical lures for bass,, for me..if'n i'd use 'bait',, i'd mite as well go saltwater fishin'..

( but wish i could find some leeches,tho )

Re: bass love a good ride

right on jtexas - do the same with 4" Yum 'dinger' worm too... center hooked with a #2 Octopus ... great finesse tactic!!

I pre-fish some tourneys with my brother (when his partner can't be there .. brothers the "85mph or fishing" guy in the family not me) and that's one of his shallow water fav's for pickin' 'em up when they're not 'hot' -mean while- I'm in the back of the boat tossin' various hardware every-which-way... :D  I've learned a lot tho.

CB - leeches, now we're talkin'!! (one of my fav's MY ;) ) How many pounds do you want me to send you?? ;) :D

Definatly try the 'wacky' style - jtexas gave some great advice.

Re: bass love a good ride

Thing about senkos is they are expensive and not very durable because of all the salt in the pour - one way to get more use out of them is to put an o-ring on 'em and slip the hook under the o-ring instead of thru the worm. a cross-section cut from a tube jig works for that, too.

I have got some "wave worms" (senko copy) made by Tikki that I hope will work as well as senko only cheaper.

Wish I had a tourny-fishing brother to show me the tricks!

Crabby, I prefer the t series type jig head.
If you hold a jig head next to the tube, bite a small hole in the tube at the position where the eye is located. Carefully feed the jig head through the hole and the hook back up throught the tube in line with the hole. The only part of the jig head showing outside of the tube is the eye and the hook.
Remember that the tube is imitating a crawdad. So let it go to the bottom and imagie small twitches that will imitate lifelike movement. The common tap, tap of a bite is your prompt to set the hook. You'll be surprized to learn that a slower is usually better. If you miss the bite, leave it alone. More often then not the Bass will pick it up again.

15-20 fish an hour is pretty common here using them.
My best fish this year on tubes was 5.2 pounder last full moon a week ago. A 4.4 Smallie a couple months ago. I've caught several large Channel Cats and big Crappie by accident this year with them also.

Your gonna love them crab bait, good luck.

http://www.canyon-plastics.com/insider-jig.html
