bass boat transducer mounting

I know this has been covered before, but where is the best location for this transom mount transducer on a fiberglass bass boat? It's a Lowrance skimmer type.

I can't really take it out and run it looking for a low turbulence area since I have 1 tube of 4200 to seal up under the rub rail, screw holes, etc and this transducer all in one shot. I'm looking at the starboard side where the PO had screw holes for a transducer, closer to the side of the boat, but behind a flat place on the hull. Is this the best place or would it be better to keep it closer to the center, but at least 12-in away from the outboard, where it would be deeper in the water?

The first pic shows the starboard side that I'm considering. The 2nd pic shows the port side with a built in area below the hook, recessed under the transom about 2-in that looks like it has a purpose?? Does anyone know what this might be for?
Thanks for your help!

Re: bass boat transducer mounting

Starboard side, but as far away from the strakes as possible. You have a stepped hull so that complicates things. You cannot have air bubbles in the water stream or the system will not work. The area you mention on the port side in the second picture looks like a blank-out area that was provided for an optional feature that required a through-hull fitting. Perhaps a storage area drain or an optional livewell configuration.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like where the PO had it mounted is probably good then, behind a flat area in the hull and between strakes.
