I have a basket case 70hp 1988 mercury OB. I disassembled this motor about a year ago for rebuilding. I had the block honed. Bought all the parts to rebuild. And there it set. My question is, just how important is it that each piston goes back where it came from, and rod, and so forth? everthing was in order, shop got cleaned rearranged, and so did the motor components. Any advice would be appreciated. I have over 900 buck in rebuild parts for this motor. I want to put it together and enjoy it for a while. Thanks,

At that point I just decided to rebuild the whole thing. I've done smaller motors before, like my 3.9. But never a 70hp. Figured I would give it a go. I am pretty handy with mechanics. I've got a fully equipped toy shop. That I tinker with 7.3 PS diesels in. and anything else that gets my interest.

All the rod bearings should be replaced but if you are going to reuse them they shouldn't be mixed up; put them on their respective rods. And don't reuse the C clips (lockrings) on the piston pins - I would put the pistons into the best fit cylinder.

Another perfect example to photograph and mark everything when disassembling things. I would serious examine everything and see if you can discern where parts where to go back. If not, eIther buy new or take a chance with the old parts. If the parts are within specs, use them. JMHO
