Basic Newbie question

I just bought our first boat. It's a mid-70's vintage runabout with a 1976 Merc 1150, 2 stroke. The previous owner told me he always burned regular 87 octane fuel. Two other boat owners have told me to burn premium. What's the best advice on this?

Re: Basic Newbie question

On most 2 stroke, or just internal combustion engines, 87 octane will do just fine. If you don't know, octane is what keeps the gas from igniting under heat and pressure, it doesn't necessarily make gas better. If you do need a higher octane, you will hear a pinging, or knocking noise from the engine, called preignition. This would be an indication that you need higher octane gas. Mostly, only high performance engines need premium to run properly, but somtimes old warn out ones need it too.

Thanks,

While this engine has some years on it, it was rebuilt by a pro shop 5 years ago. So I'll give the 87 octane a try.

Thanks again!
