With lots of time and money invested, I don't want to assume anything. Although the boat is running good, I want to check that the stock distributor is doing right. Does anyone have a link to the curve specs for my engine (Volvo Penta 570a)? Also, a quick rundown for the procedure. Under load (at dock, like initial idle and timing) or not and advance readings every how often from what to what? Thanks!!

Also, since my distributor is a 91, and eventually will die, I'm thinking ahead for a replacement. Should I try to find someone to do a rebuild or look for a stock replacement (saw a couple around) or Mallory YLM624AV. I'm sure many have charted this before, I appreciate the advice.

Thanks Maclin, I always get alot from your posts being that we have similar set ups.

I have the service manual and my boat is timed based upon that, at 6BTDC. I haven't done TA yet, but will soon. I wanted to get the motor broke first. I'm looking for the stock specs for the actual curve so that I can supply that to a tech with a sun machine or similar to get my dizzy w/ in spec to prevent early detonation. Also, I want to compare that curve to my findings when I do TA. I may be good right now, but like I said I don't want to assume. I think I got that from you.

While your on, do you run your original prestolite?

Mine is all original still.

I have not even had a light on this one, so I couldn't give any "intersect" points for a graph showing the actual curve. I used to do that with a dial-back and watch the curve on all my engines, but as I got older it seemed less interesting if it was running right. When younger I did mods to advance curves for friends on certain types of (MoPar) engines, it was fun then.

This one just works, power is great, no hiccups.

I have seen posts from others on this type of distributor, I know Frantically Relaxing had problems with one of these.

Here's to a long distributor life for all...

Yep, having fun. Not near as intense as it was to me a year ago:/ Guess I'm in the discovery stage and learned a little and had a few successes.

Probably over thinking it, but just got to thinking the springs may have gotten light and allow for the advance at to fast a curve for the size of the boat and age of the distributor. I've read some stuff, too. But I don't think the rig really has that many hours on it. If ya'll run across specs, send them my way. Thanks for the reply's over the last year, I'm grateful!
