I have a 1998 Four Winns with a Volvo Penta 4.3 GL. I am trying to set the base timing on it. I am making a home made timing shunt, but I need to know if I need to unplug the 2 terminal plug that is plugged into the distributer or leave it plugged in. My distributer has 2 plugs. A 2 pin plug that goes to the coil, and a 4 pin plug that just has a rubber boot on it. Do I need to unplug the 2 pin while I have the shunt plugged in? or do I leave it plugged in.

Assuming you actually have a 98 engine (BY model)
4.3GL, GS
6? BTDC- w/89AKI or higher
1? BTDC- w/87AKI
Volvo Penta 885163-6 shunt required

You leave the other one plugged in, it goes to the coil.

Does this shunt have to come from Volvo Penta Dealer or will any autoparts store have it?

Couldn't say, never tried to buy one from an auto parts. I worked at a VP dealership and we bought about a dozen of them and gave one to each mechanic. Full retail is like 10 bucks.
