is there any relationship between the barometer rising or falling and fish activity or a certain barometer reading for good fish catching?

Re: barometer

I always thought that rising barometer gets the fish to biting, seems like they turn on when a storm system is moving in, or the wind changes direction. Theory being that storm activity scatters the food at the bottom of the food chain, shuts down feeding opportunity for a while. Ever have much luck day after a cold front moves in?

Re: barometer

I think a steady barometer is best.any drastic movement up or down will freak the fish out,but what the heck a tough day of fishing is better than working.

Re: barometer

Barometric pressure influences where fish tend to position themselve's in water depths. As the atmospheric pressure increases it puts additional pressure on the fish's swim bladder. Therefore, fish that were previously found in deeper water find it more comfortable to rise to a lesser depth as the barometric pressure increases.

As this phenenomon tends to concentrate fish at a higher depth, fish also recognize more competition for their food which often times contributes to succesful angling opportunities.

Not sure about FW but all heck breaks loose right before a strong front passes through around here. Some of my best days have been right before hurricane or the first good NW blow of the season.

Re: barometer

As far as Bass fishing goes, the approching storm or falling barometer allways turns the fish on, When the storm passes and the skys turn blue, ya might as well stay home.

I agree, fish when the barometer is falling and the fish will be more active. At least that has been my experience.

Fish always bite better with an overcast sky. If the barometer doesnt go back up, the fishing will still be good in the morning hours and late evening.

Catfish before a storm or even during is great. Saltwater, nothing like redfishing when a hurricane is about to roll in.

Agree with lubedude:
A falling barometer will increase the activity of fish.

Re: barometer

I have read the when the barmeter goes down, mico organisms are able to go to shallower depths which attract bait fish and hence bring on bigger game fish. So a lower pressure will increase chances of catching fish.
