Hi,

I'm looking to buy a used 16' Barkley-Young CC
from a private party. The boat was made in Canada and it's a 1989. I'm having no luck finding anything on the internet on this boat or boat company. Can someone steer me in the right direction or have any experience with this boat?

thanks

Re: Barkley-Young boats

Hey looseknot, thought I was the only one that owned a Barkley Young. I have a 14ft model and have had it for about a year and a half. Mine is an 85 from what I could determine. They were made in Toronto during the 80's and went out of business in the late eighties/early nineties. They were a popular utility type boat in the cottage areas here in central Ontario. I'm quite happy with the construction and handling. Mine has quite a flat bottom and is a harsh ride in rough water. Only thing to watch out for is that the foam core may have absorbed alot of water over the years if all thru hule holes were not sealed properly. Could add 100's of pounds of extra weight.

We have a 1988 BY dual console. We love ours! IF you are still interested, we are selling ours this year as we are upgrading to a Chrsicraft Launch.
The last reply was a little harsh about the ride. The boat is a little splashy in Mid range due to a sever chine in the bow. but the deep Vee and flat stern design is an amazing heavy weather boat and ski boat! We have often needed to use our boat as the club rescue launch. it has a higher free board than a Whaler SSport or Montauk. the Deck is a very large uncluttered rectangle which provides enormous space usage for sails and equipment.
Over the last few years we have had our Evinrude 70 VRO meticulously Maintained and replaced the Prop. Also we had an insurance survey in 1996 and it was considered in very good conditiona and still a dry core. To be safe and under the recommendation of the appraiser, we installed a drain in the stern for fall drainage... what a waste. in 4 weeks there has been less than 1 cup.

Re: Barkley-Young boats

I just bought a Barkley Young 44 . Its a 13.5 Whaler type skiff. The only problem so far is a pulled out bow eye. Looks like I will have to cut an access hole in the deck to fix. I have searched the net for bow eye replacement in a sealed deck foam core boat but so far no luck. I like the suggestion about the stern drain. There are a lot of drill holes for various installations over the years, many with regular steel screws that have rusted. I am worried about how much extra water is in it. Maybe thats why the bow eye pulled out. Rot.
I didn't think it was a project boat when I bought it. Still, an interesting boat.
I can't find anything on the company either and I am up here in Ontario.

Cheers

HI, If you are still interested we have finally decided to sell our BY 16 Dual console. The "Wild Coyote" (58-60 mph top speed) has been meticulously maintained and serviced. Only used in Lake Ontario, it is a 1988 with a 70 Evinrude VRO
(VRO Still perfect- Many VRO injectors have not been properly maintained so many have converted to mixed tanks instead). Let me know if you are interested and I will post a few pics to review.
We are having another insurance appraisal this year too.. Last time 2004 Rated as 'good-very good' condition.

I finally got my Barkley-Young on the water. I put a 30 hp Johnson on it and it is very fast. Far more power than I need. I love the position of the steering - well aft, almost where you would sit if it was a tiller. It is a fun boat. Thinking of putting a pedestal seat in it.
