The admiral's Birthday is in a week or so and I asked what she'd like for her special day. Her reply surprised me, she wants to go on an evening hot air ballon ride!!! At first I thought she was joking because she HATES heights. I mean she won't climb a step ladder more than 2 or 3 steps without getting the trembles. Myself, I don't mind heights at all and used to be a steeple jack in my early years but I'm not so sure about a balloon. Things that fly should have an engine and control surfaces, period! (You know, controlled flight.)

Did any of that matter when I called and booked a flight this moring? Not a bit but I'm hoping neither of us chicken out at the last minute, those rides aren't cheap and as its a fair distance (100 miles) for us to travel to get there and there are no refunds once booked.

I figured I'd take the camera and get as many shots as possible but any suggestions on what else a fella should take along?

You could be her hero and secretly prepare something to bring (her favorite food, drink, snack, etc..). Arrange for someone special to greet her at the landing site she hasn't seen in a while or other surprise?
Remember to dress for cool and breezy.
An early Happy Bday to the Mrs. Bubba!

Just keep your hands away from the rope that opens the top of the ballon. After the pilot pulled that thing when we were close to the ground I am thinking, "this thing is not as safe as it seems".

Take a pair of binoculars - makes it easier to spot ground stuff from a different angle. You won't use 'em much, but you might enjoy them a little bit.

Sounds like you've got a good ride lined up. Happy Birthday Admiral Mrs. Bubba!

Re: Balloon Ride this month

A couple years in a row during this "ballon classic" which occurs in a nearby country park, a balloon has ended up landing in a yard across the street from my house. I think it's because my neighborhood is near a river and they may be deciding not to cross that. I don't think I'd be too keen on going up in something with that little control.

Knowing Bubba, next week we'll be reading a thread about his new hot air balloon ride business!
