Re: Ball gear & driveshaft

Ayuh,.... Have you tried sourcing Parts for that ole Buick yet,..??

You've Really gotta figure out yer Ultimate Goal, 'n what it's gonna co$t ya to get there,....

One necessary Truth of boat ownership is that a Free boat is the Mo$t Expen$ive boat you can ever own,.....

LOL kind of like getting a free dog. This was my approach for a boat suitable for ocean fishing out of Brookings, Oregon for Salmon. Needed to be better than twenty feet and sea worthy and able to navigate fog, lots of electronic. Been watching boats for sale and looking at some came to the conclusion I be paying 15 Grand on up. Sure its going to start but most likely motor is in need of a rebuild as I'm starting to get the drift that marine motor don't last that long especially when owner don't take care of them. I did find some nice boats but all sway toward to much cabin not enough fishing. Than I ran across this open twenty four foot 71 Newmen that been a project boat for twenty years by several different folks. Now sitting with no title no motor completely gutted on a once brand new tandem axle trailer with once new tires that hasn't see the road much the price 300.00 bucks take all, I didn't think I could go wrong, I about crap my paints first time I put on the brakes and the surge brakes kick in an smooth as silk. The trailer had Arizona plates on it, long story short trace plates found second project owner who bought the new trailer. With a few phone call and paper work a month later I now have title for trailer & boat. Got the GM V-6 & sterndrive from 17 Glastron tri hull with another nice single axle trailer no title almost same deal little less money, the guy just wanted it gone. I figure the GM V-6 will do for fishing don't plan on pulling ski. Jeep also had this motor from 66-71, Summit Racing has several high performance cam kits and 4 barrel manifold for this engine but no after market cylinder heads. Completed tear down of engine today all looks very good except right cylinder head looks like electrolysis has eaten away on two exhaust ports from the out side. I can repair this easy enough but would buy a better used cylinder head if I could find one. What to do with this engine the smart side of me would put new standard size rings and bearings in slap her back together with new start, new carb and new Plugs & wires. would be a good sound running engine, the kid in me wants to put Summit Racing cam & lifter kit and four barrel manifold & carb in. On the cam I would keep rpm range down around 1000-4800. Thinking long duration on these cams might make water creeping back worse on the exhaust side will have to research this. I have the skills and full shop to build almost anything the electronics will be half the cost of this boat with radar and autopilot. A friend took me out fishing in his boat at Brookings was my turn behind the wheel as we were trolling. I woke up behind the wheel turn around to see my friend was sleeping too all are bait was gone. So I figure autopilot will least keep us in a straight line LOL.

Ayuh,.... I appreciate what yer doin', as I do it all the time, patchin' up old hulls, 'n repowerin' 'em,....

I'm just pointin' out yer takin' the hard road to get there,...

Yer motor ain't been build since '71, it's a long gone Buick,...
Ditto the drive ya chose, it's an antique OMC, which has been outa business for way over a decade,...

Many, Many of the parts, 'n pieces ya need to rebuild, 'n maintain this driveline are No Longer Available,...

If ya Love that hull, you oughta be stuffin' a Merc or Volvo driveline, with Chevy power into it,...

Mercruiser, Volvo, 'n Chevy are atleast still in business, 'n most of the parts, for most of their drivelines, are Still easily bought,...

No disrespect intended,.... I've warned ya, now I'll leave ya alone,...

Good Luck,.... :)

Not only is it an OMC, but one of the most difficult to source parts for that you could have found. Can't agree with Bondo enough on this one. I owned a 1980 OMC Stringer with a GM engine & while maintenance parts were easy to come by still, I was always dreading any major issue that I wouldn't be able to source parts for, you're a whole order of magnitude more difficult to source parts for than I was.

As Bondo said, good luck... :)

Gee guy?s I don?t know what to say I?ve done my research any used motor & stern drive going to have to be torn down and rebuilt were talking oil seals, water pump parts, rebuild tilt motor maybe bearings maybe a gear. I found 4 different suppliers that got parts not cheap like the 300-400 dollars drive shaft wow! So made my own finish machining it last night out of 4130 chrome moly steel and this baby won?t rust. Miss a bid on ebay a match set ball gears $60.00 I refuse to pay much more than that I?ll build a jig to make these parts on my milling machine and out of better material. Yes if I crack a housing would be pretty much done maybe I weld pretty well too. Parts for the GM V-6 motor is on the shelf everywhere I even found valve guides and valve seats. Summit Racing stock 4 different Cams kits include lifters timing gears set, Trick-out Alum 4 barrel Manifold and was told would be adding Aluminum cylinder heads for GM V-6 to their already large inventory; it?s the Jeep folks that drive this. My 71, 24-foot Newmen boat came with a transom mount OMC (no motor) exact model stern drive that I took out of the 17 foot Glastron. So I got two sterndrive that I will rebuild and that GM V6 motor will look good and purr when I get done. Now my wife might buy into that hard road story LOL. She didn?t understand why I needed to build a 36 inch cut band mill with a 8 foot travel bed on wheels until she saw the beautiful kitchen cabinets I made her from Madrone that I slab with my band mill as I got endless supply of Madrone trees on the ranch. Maybe a hard road for some people me I see material for making band mill has already paid for itself. If I can make it I won?t buy it and ya know after while you get pretty good at it, and when I say full shop I mean full shop.

Re: Ball gear & driveshaft

you have a 225 cubic inch V6. there are not many parts available for it.

4130 will rust

make sure your looking at parts for the 225 V6 and not the 231 cubic inch V6 - a completely different animal

unless your running a closed cooling system. I would not put aluminum intake or heads.
