I just bought a 1998 Hurricane deck boat with a bad Volvo Penta 5.7 (cracked block) and no outdrive. I have just bought a 2004 Mercruiser 5.0 with an Alpha 1 outdrive. Why I didn't think of this sooner but now I am trying to find out if this will work. There are 6 holes for the outdrive opening. I was just hoping to pull motors and swap them and put on the Alpha 1. Does anyone know if this will work smoothly?? I greatly appreciate your comments!!

Thank!

Why not just remove the 5.7 ENGINE and replace it with the Merc? You'd re-use the dampener plate from the Volvo. Leave the intermediate housing and outdrive where they are.

About the only thing you can do is remove all the Volvo parts, and install the Mercruiser parts. Don't even think about trying to mix parts.
Not sure what you mean by "6 holes for the outdrive", but the cutout in the transom for the SX/DP-S style drives is the same cutout as the Merc, but not the same if you have the 290 Style drive.
While your boat may be a 98, you could have an engine/drive package that is a 97 (Very Common Practice in boats), and Volvo used both the SX and 290 styles in 97.
