Inventory cost if you may ormay not sell a part. I know where I can get parts out of a parts house if needed. you pay for parts because you need them that day.

just my $0.02

credit card transactions cost about 3%. that is why banks love credit cards and business owners do not.

I agree the OP payed too much for parts, and the shop should be a bit more consistent with policies.

Many of you guys are missing the point IMHO. Projo is not quibbling with the concept of upcharging for convenience. That is certainly a practice that is acceptable to the general public, otherwise no one would ever pay more for a can of dip at the Kwik-E-Mart to avoid having to drive across town to the grocery store or tobacco shop. The problem is this is not a simple matter of upcharging for convenience. This clown is basically making it up as he goes along. Veteran's discount in some cases but not in others? Fine. Have a real policy and post it. Unwillingness to absorb fees for accepting plastic? Fine. Have a real policy and post it rather than arbitrarily doubling the price on a part at the counter. This guy would drive me nuts if I had to trade with him.

Yep, case in point when I started to put those vent covers back and he then decided to go ahead with the debit card transaction. I got the feeling he was just stalling to see if I would spend the 20 bucks and when he found out I wasn't he folded.

As for the military discount I don't EXPECT it anywhere, but it doesn't hurt to ask. But with these guys it seems like they say they do UNTIL they actually have to make good on it. Then it's on a case-by-case basis.

Yes he would drive me nuts also but he is the one with the needed parts.

I used to deal with a small shop for parts for my old 68, 85 hp johnson OB and he was to only one around, this is way back before the net was common. He had a 200 x 100 building with old motors stacked up about waist high. , And yes he charged what ever he wanted , but to be fair I allways felt he was being decent on his prices.

I agree with incoop 100%. I never liked working with a jerk, I don't like to sit next to a jerk on a bus or plane, and if the local Wal-Mart stands a known jerk in the "greeter" spot, I use the other door. Sure, this guy can run his business as he wants, but I'd be telling everybody I know what a jerk he was. In fact, if I were the OP I would have named the shop in the post.

Well I am spreading the word, in a way. Usually when I ask places about OMC parts and maintenance they refer me to this shop becuse they are the only ones around that deal with OMC.

Funny thing, I always tell them I am tired of that shop ripping me off so I won't go there anymore, and more times than not they have a similar story. I wonder why they keep referring customers to them? I guess I would, but with a warning.

Overall I just think that was the worst place I cold have started as a first-time boat owner, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. No big deal, I am getting on top of this whole boat ownership thing.

Projo, I found a pretty good place whan I lived in Overland Park. It was in Kansas City, KS on Osage street, I can PM the name if you want to pursue. Has "U.S." in the name, hopefully not the place you went to, but my experience with those guys was very good for my Volvo Penta parts quests.

BTW one of the best prop shops in the world is in Olathe, Midwest Propeller Inc. , southwest Olathe.

They had Mercruiser, Mercury, and OMC parts also.
