Bad Tires?

I recently bought a 19ft Silverline and a tandem trailer on craigslist. Wife and I are going on vacation next week so I have been working to get the trailer ready for a 1300 mile trip. I repacked the wheel bearings, replaced bearings and races on one axle, installed bearing buddies and replaced the 4.80x8 load range B tires with 5.70x8 load range C tires. This afternoon I took the boat to a local lake and I couldn't drive over 30mph without the trailer shaking like heck. It seems the tires are out of round.

tires may have a flat spot from sitting, you didnt say how old the trailer was. I'd take it to a tire center and have them checked before a 1300 mile trip!!!!!!!!!!

A 19ft boat on a trailer with 8 inch rim tires? Am, I reading the size wrong? That size boat should be on a trailer with at least 13 inch rim tires. Can you post a pic of your setup.

Were the tires balanced by the folks that mounted them for you?....trailer tires require balancing just like car tires. 8" seems kinda small!

In that size, they gotta be bias ply tires. Some have a tendancy to get flat spots from sitting any length of time and don't smooth out till they heat up a bit. If just a short trip to a "local lake", then they may not have smoothed out by the time you got there.

Yup. I know that sitting for any length of time could cause flat spots on these tire types. It was about a 4 mile run to the lake. and a hot day so I thought that would be long enough to get the flat spots out. I'm old enough to have driven cars with bias ply tires and after less than a mile, in colder weather, they smoothed out. I had just put the new tires on a few days before anyway. They are Towmaster tires, if that make a difference.

I have a few trailers and never had the tires balanced. Besides, any out of balance issue would show up at higher speeds, not cause extensive shaking at 20mph.

How did it pull with the old tires? Maybe race installed wrong? Wheel not flush with hub? If it was smooth before and rough now... go over what was changed. I too dont balance my trailer wheels.

Check sidewalls for tire cord/fabric material...nylon cord/fabric has a stronger "memory" and tends to flat-spot much worse...that's why most tires have polyester cord/fabrics....good luck!

+1; I recently replaced a tire that had noticable bounce that could be seen and heard from a sidewall that had a bulge. These were pretty old tires though on mine....

Re: Bad Tires?

Did you put new wheels/rims on or just tires? Maybe it's the rim and not the tire?

Re: Bad Tires?

So, I assume it didn't shake before you changed the tires? If not, it has to be the new tires, improper mounting, out of round, not balanced, or perhaps the lug nuts or lug bolts don't center the wheel when tightened. I'm of the opinion you do need to balance the wheels on trailers, so I'm in the minority here. If you've ever seen a poorly balanced tire/wheel hopping up and down the road on a trailer, you'd probably think they need balancing, too.

All those items mentioned were checked as that's just part of doing a job right the first time. I dropped the boat and trailer off at a local boat shop where they will check it out to see what the problem is.

Re: Bad Tires?

The verdict is that all the tires are out of round and one with the sidewall bubbling after just a few miles. Also the trailer will not hold up on a long trip with the existing tire/wheel combination. I need to look around for a replacement trailer.
The tires are Towmaster. I know they are Chinese tires but I can't believe all 5 I purchased are crap.

Besides losing the fenders, what would happen if you went up to 12" tires? You can get up to load range D or E and still have the same hubs.

Re: Bad Tires?

How many 19ft glass boats has anyone seen with a 8 inch rim tire? I have had and seen 12/14ft tin boats with 8 inch rim tires but, not 19ft glass boats. I still would like to see a pic of the setup. I have been reading this post, and only have seen one person mention a 12 inch rim tire. Am I the only one here other then tx1961, that mentions a bigger rim/tire. This is a 19ft boat, not a lite tinnie, or did I get that wrong.

No you're correct. I mentioned it in another thread - tryin' not to be overly persistent about it :)

I'd like to hear some other's opinions on the 12" tires on a 1,300 mile trip with a 19' glasser (Silverlines a kinda' "fatties") on 'em. I'm curious as to how well some more experienced guys think it would do.
