Have a 1968 Evinrude 85 H.P. I have cleaned all connections from battery to solenoid to starter including ground wires. I am getting power from the starter to the solenoid. Am not getting power from the solenoid to the starter. Is there a test that I can do, or is the solenoid bad? All help appreciated.

Re: Bad Solenoid?

If the high current cable into the solenoid reads 12.6V and the output does not, or if the solenoid does not click, when engaged you probably have a bad solenoid.

Good luck. :)

Re: Bad Solenoid?

just went through this with my '70 Johnson. there are a myriad of tests you can do to check for voltage at the solenoid, key, cutout switch, etc. but i'll bet it's the solenoid, probably only $25-30. if you still want to do a test, i'll post a quick way to check using a jumper wire to the starter (just make sure you pull the spark plug boots). otherwise, i've found that a good repair manual details things pretty well. or you can just throw a new solenoid on and see if it works. or i can just ramble on and on....
