i was changing the lower shift cable to the alpha 1 drive on my sons wellcraft 192 american with a 170 merc engine. here we go. pulled off drive, disconnected cable from engine. Now the fun starts. The brass bolt that is attached to the end of the shift cable and is screwed into the bel housing would not budge. i eventually stripped the bolt head. Got out hammer and chissel. Was making slow progress, then i decided to go to the store and buy a reversing tap. Big mistake.Started to thred in the tap but the brass bolt would not budge. I started to take out the tap when it broke. Any suggestions?

Probably not what you want to hear, but a new bellhousing could be in your future. Might want to check a machine shop repairing the bellhousing as compared to the price of a new one and make the decision.

I can usually shatter a tap with a flat punch and some good whacks

How much of it did you break in there ?

If it is a LOT you may have to pull the bell housing to hit from the other side

It is dangerous as lots of small parts will try and poke your eye out
