hello all
i just purchashed a 1996 2stroke mercury 15hp and found water followed by milky gear oil when inspecting oil. One of the drain screws was misssing gasket so i will drain replace with new oil and replace gasket. If this dosn't fix it do i just replace prop seal? is it hard to do?
thx:lol:

It could be the seals on the drain plugs. I would try that. But if you have major contamination then it could be your oil seals in your water pump. Generally you can have water entering through your waterpump oil seals, shift shaft seals, or your prop seals. All of these jobs will take some time if it is your first time. Good luck! Oh yeah. Buy a book now, lol. Order from amazon. It will save you money in the long run from making mistakes.

replaced drain vent seals and put drain vent scews in correct location(they were backwards) went for a good ride checked vent screw oil was fine then pulled drain screw and a small amount of water came out followed by nice clear oil. why would there be some water but not turn oil milky?

It may of been left over water from the first time, it often takes a few times filling and draining. Just keep a close eye on it.

If you keep finding water then drop the UL and do a pressure / vacuum test.
