1996 88 hp SP
6 amp unreg.

Any harm in running my engine with a bad rectifier. Im not sure if I have a bad rectifier or not. Im not sure if Im using my ameter correctly. Im going to have a friend test it next week with his. Question is, if it is bad, is there any harm using my boat this weekend? I have a new battery, and notice after several hours of running the motor at low RPM, and the running lights on, my lights go dim after a few hours. Basically I have a low load, and the lights still go dim after a few hours of running the motor. Oh yeah, sometimes the tach gauge drops to zero at high RPMs, like above 3000.

Re: Bad rectifier?

Sure sounds like a bad rectifier. Tach problem is an almost sure indicator.

Don't believe you will damage anything but the longevity of your battery.

And you may get stranded if you drain the battery.

Re: Bad rectifier?

Jeff..... Running a engine with a faulty rectifier prevents the AC voltage being emitted by the stator (under the flywheel) to be converted to DC voltage which is needed to charge the battery.

The stator is constantly producing this AC voltage, and with a faulty rectifier, that voltage backs up at the stator resulting in overheating and a meltdown of the stator which in turn results in erratic ignition among other problems.

Bottom line.... Correct the problem to avoid additional problems.

Joe,
could this explain why my stator went bad about 2 weeks ago?

Re: Bad rectifier?

I had a bad rectifier/regulator... the tach did not work but the recharge did. My mechanic informed me that their are 2 parts... ususally both break together but in some cases only the tach will go out. I like having my tach as I am always sensitive to performance and maintenance
