Bad recirc valve symptoms?

I am slowly whittling away at my 94 200TXERK Evinrude's running issues. My manual states to start at 2-1/2 turns on the air bleed screws. My engine seems to run best at the max recommend adjustment from 2-1/2, which is 4-3/4 to 5 turns out. It still seems to be running rich up to about 2500, then kicks in abruptly from there on up to higher rpms. I can't seem to get it to carburet very cleanly at upper low to mid range.
I synched/linked per the manual, and checked timing while under way at 4700.(all ok) The carbs are spotless. I did find one thing though and am wondering how much it will affect the running. While checking the recirc system, I found one valve bad.(#3)The guts were gone--just a straight hole through the fitting. I had to order a new one and have not received it yet. I also get great hole shots, but only if I hit it right after a good high speed run to clean out the plugs. If It idles for only a short time, the engine is a little sluggish on the holeshot until it cleans out. Has anyone experience a similar situation? I have not had this engine too long and the previous owner did not know that it was not running right. All comps also good across the board, so I know everything is basically ok, but I just want it to run right with nice smooth transition from low to high speed.(I don't have this right now)

Bad recirc. valves could cause the problem you discribe. The manual tell's how to check these valves, or you could just replace all of them. Also, new hose's would be a good idea.

Thanks R.
I had already done the cmplete hose system check. That's when I found the bad valve on #3. My hoses are all in good condition. No brittleness or stiffness encountered when removing them for the checks. I am supposed to pick up the new valve today.
SGC
