bad kill switch?

I recently bought an '88 Evinrude, 25hp, electric start, tiller motor. Mounted it on my Bass Tracker, sat it in the drum, started it up to check for leaks. Well, I hit the kill switch on the end of the tiller handle and the motor wouldnt quit. Had to pull the fuel line off. I checked the wires and they seem to be fine. What else should I look for? Where could I find a replacement switch (if that's the problem)? Any idea how much this piece should run? Sorry about all the questions. Im new to the boating scene and I havent been able to find a manual for this motor yet. What's the best manual for this motor? Alright, I'll shut up now. Thanks!

Rick

Re: bad kill switch?

Try jumping a wire across the switch to kill the motor. If that works, replace the switch. If it does not kill the motor, trace the wires to their terminal points, check the conections, and do a continuity test on the wires. If all that doesn't work, maybe someone else would have a better solution.
Good Luck

PS I have a '69 442 Conv. and she cuts loose now and again

Re: bad kill switch?

Thanks! I'll try jumping the wires when I get home. I called an Evinrude dealer here around home and they said the switch is $78! What a rip!

Angus: My 442 is a '72. It's undergoing a suspension rebuild right now.

Try www.theoutboardwizard.com
Call Ralph and he's usually lower $ than most.

Any momentary normally open switch with the same or higher amp rating will do the trick. Find one for outdoor exposure use about that size and the price might not be so bad. Just a suggestion...

Re: bad kill switch?

Simply check between the two wires coming from the switch with an ohm meter to see if the switch makes contact. If it does disconnect the black-yellow wire from the pulse pak, and short it to ground with the engine running, or with a spark checker hooked up with the engine not running. If the engine does'nt stop running, or you fail to loose spark at the spark checker, your pak is at fault.

You can get a Senloc or Clymer aftermarket manual here on iboats. On line with "Helpful Links" is "Manuals". Just click there.
Or:
Factory Manual

c/6
Hooty

The factory manuals are great. step by step instructions with pictures. they are easy to read and are specific to your engine. should run between 35-40 bucks

Hooty, the link you gave for the factory manuals doesnt list my boat. Is there another place to find these? Thanks.

Re: bad kill switch?

Well, after looking for a week, I finally found a replacement for a very reasonable price (compared to what the dealer wanted). Got it for $25. Yeah, I could have threw a switch in there from an auto store (which I did buy and was about to put on) but I wanted to keep it the way it is supposed to be. Plus, I need the emergency kill. Thanks for all the help guys!
