I have a 50 gallon tank and the gas guage is not working. Where should I start?. Does the senser in the tank usually go bad or just connections somewhere? The boat is 3 years old.

I would start by checking the wire connections at the sending unit on the top of the tank. If you short the wire to ground and your needle moves then either a bad connection there or a bad sending unit.

test the gauge thus..Disconnect the sender wire from the gauge, and with the ignition on it should read empty. Hook a jumper from the sender terminal on the gauge to ground, and it should read full with the ignition on. If this does happen, then ohm the sender wire from the gauge end to the sender end, after you disconnect it from the sender. You should get lots of continuity. if you have lots of continuity, and the gauges tests out okay, that leaves the sender in the tank. Girst, be SURE the tank and sender have a good ground with a jumper wire, and see if the gauge works then. If not, you get to pull the sender, and replace it. You can use a universal sender from NAPA, you may have to buy a gauge with it to be accurate.
