Bad cylinder...what to do?

I have recently experiencing problems with my pontoon (24' with 115 Johnson). Since I am a first year boat owner, I am still in the learning phase of everything. I have been experiencing a slight loss of power as well as hard starts after motor has been ran a while & is restarted. I was also concerned with the "lack" of speed I was getting. Now I understand that it is a pontoon boat, but from other similar setups on the forum, I should be able to get more than 16mph @ WOT (5200 rpm).
I decided to take the boat in & have it looked at. Dealer called & said that the #1 cylinder tested at 18% on the leakdown test (while all the others tested fine). He said that this would be a result of the loss of my topend power & a rebuild would be $4500! I sure don't have that kind of money to spend right now, so I was just curious to see if there were any other feasible options? Also wanted to check with the members here to see if what I am being told by the dealer is correct? What if I just continued running the motor with the 1 bad cylinder? Sorry for the dumb questions since I am not a mechanic.

Re: Bad cylinder...what to do?

Well a completely rebuilt powerhead for that motor is around $2500 which is all 4 cylinders (Depends on year of the motor for price).

I would shop around and find an independent mechanic and get it repaired MUCH MUCH cheaper.......... or you can do it yourself.

Yes the dealer gave you an absolute premium price. $4500 is real high considering a rebuilt powerhead (Complete) is 1/2 that.

Look at ebay and you will see. Without knowing the year of your motor you will have to look.

Keep an eye on CL and you might find an entire used 115 for under $1500

You have many options.

Did the dealer that did the leakdown test also check the compression? If so, what numbers did he get? Would be interesting to see if the compression/leakdown numbers change after some Bombardier Engine Tuner is run through the powerhead.
