Thank you for the reply's. Now that you are thinking about this let me expand on what I have.

AQ200C volvo, 305 gm motor, with points ignition. At issue is the tach needle pegs when the ignition switch is turned to the on position.

I have a single pole starter with an engine mounted 4 prong relay. One prong is for the power supply, the second is supposed to be ignition, the third for starter activation and the fourth goes to the starter.

The ignition switch has three wires. main power, ignition and starter. The ignition runs from the switch to the ballast relay to the coil. From the coil to the engine mounted relay.

I ran a new wire from the switch to the ballast, coil to the relay and a new tach wire from the coil to the tach. The same problem still exists. When the ignition is turned to the on position the tach needle pegs.

I also noticed that the ballast resitor got pretty warm. As I understand it that is the role of the ballast resitor to disapate excess power into heat.

Someone also mentioned the condensor could be causing the problem. Can you explain further. This happened out of the blue. All I did was change the shift cable. After the installation I wanted to run the engine and I had this problem.

I also checked the neutral switch and it is working properly.

Help.
