vovlvo aq200c, 305 engine, ponts type ignition.
purple wires for ignition. I connect the purple from the ignition switch to the ballast resitor, from the ballast resistor to the coil, from the coil to the relay for the starter and power.

At least this is how the book shows it. When i turn on the ignition switch to the power on position everything works except that the tach needle pegs as high as it can go.

I checked the power to the ballast resitor and it is good. coming out of the resitor it is very weak where it mounts to the relay.

someone please give me some input to the problem. either I am hooking it up wrong or I have a bad wire.

put on your thinking caps.

thanks

run new jumper wires and see if things change if so... replace that wire! easy! as long as its wired up as the book says, then its either a "bad connection" like your asking for help on or its a bad rotted out wire, or one that is shorting out on something. im not sure but the condenser could have something to do with it to? gotta have proper voltage to the coil as well.

Re: bad connection!!!! help!!!!!!

You have it wired wrong. The other thing is Volvo didn't use purple for ignition back then. So obviously someone has done some rewiring using the new color codes.
Your purple wire from the ignition switch should go to the ballast resistor.
From the resistor, it will go to the positive side of the coil. The negative side of the coil goes directly to the distributor point lead inside the distributor.
The relay was only used as a start relay, and had absolutly nothing to do with the ignition system.
You also should have a wire from terminal D (see picture below) going directly to the positive terminal on the coil for starting. It gives full cranking voltage to the coil for easier starts.

Re: bad connection!!!! help!!!!!!

Thanks for the replys. Now that I have you thinking about this problem, let me explain a little further what I have.

aq200c, 305 gm engine with points ignition. My starter is a single wire starter that uses a relay mounted on the engine to recieve power for starting.

the relay mounted on the engine has 4 poles. The top pole is for the power feed off of the main battery cutoff switch. the second pole is for the purple ignition wire which comes from the ignition switch. The 3rd pole is for the ignition start wire coming off the ignition switch to activate the bottom pole which goes to the starter.

The ignition switch has 3 wires. main red power wire. Purple ignition wire. yellow striped wire to activate the startrer motor.

The purple wire goes from the back of the ignition switch to the ballast resitor. From the ballast resitor to the coil. From the coil to the engine mounted relay.

Some one mentioned that the condensor could be causing the problem. As mentioned before the issue is that when the ignition switch is turned to the on position the tach needle pegs. the only wire that is getting power at the back of the tach when the ignition is turned to the on position is the ignition wire. All the rest of the guages recieve power from this wire and are working.
