Bad coil cause overheat???

hey i just noticed my coil wire is lose of the coil and i pulled it out with no effort. its on the same side of my motor thats been burning up. also i noticed when i tried to start yesterday it back fired a few times and ran like crap. i know it would cause the backfire and bad running but would it cause it to run hot??<br /><br />Steve

I do know that retarded spark can cause overheating, but not sure if this could retard the spark enough to cause it on one side or not, HMMMMMMM!
