The doc gave me the choice of staying another day or going home. Duh, I decided to come on home. I'm in a good deal of pain being as I'm sliced up on the left and the right groins.

Tried to get pain med filled on the way home but my pharmacy was out of stock. Good thing I've still got most of the last fill here at the house.

I'm not going to be a "hero" this time around. When I'm in pain I'll be taking the med!!

Take the meds on a schedule BEFORE you are in pain. Isnt instant relief. And take it easy, esp while on the meds.

Cost me a 2nd abdominal hernia repair getting back to my regular routine too soon....

Good to be home I'm sure. Rest up.

See I knew you would have a post today. And while you are feeling pain, you are finished with it now as well. And that has to be a great feeling as well. Use the pain pills as instructed and time to now relax and rest and take it easy. I would certainly milk it out for everything I could too. But that is just me. Glad you are back home. Nobody can get any rest in any hospital. They have to do so many checks, vitals and daily blood work every so many hours, that you really can't relax and repair.

It's always good to be home.

For the 1st few days if the pain meds say every 4 hrs. or as needed don't wait till needed. I learned the very hard way about that while still in the ICU.
After having 2 different bypasses in a weeks time one of the blood tests came back and indicated that I needed a transfusion. Well at that time I had blown out all the IV's accept the one that had the morphine drip. The stupid ICU nurse pulled the morphine to infuse the whole blood. By the time they were done with 2 units I was in pain that I'd never experienced before and never want to again. About that same time my surgeon came in to check on me and he went ballistic. I could hear him in the hall dressing down that nurse and after that I'd never seen her again. It took 6hrs to get my pain back under control.

That surgery gave me an incision from my sternum to my pelvis and 6" in my groin on each leg. Now I worry all the time also because these artificial graphs on avg. only last 5 to 6 years and I'll soon be on 10 years. To think about it, it doesn't seem that long ago.

Don't think you've mention what the surgery was. If you like PM me and we can compare notes.

Good for you ... take as little as you can (IMHO), but don't be foolish about hurting. The faster you can be done with 'em, I would. But you typically can't do the things that are more important to healing up and re-gaining strength if you're hurting like crazy.

Glad to hear you're home. Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

Obviously you will heal faster without worrisome pain. However, When I had my hip replaced, I too was on some pretty serious pain meds. And I can tell you those pills worked really well. But that also scared me and I made myself do without early on to not get depended on them. I actually had a third of the first prescription bottle fill left over after the fact. And even a year later, my doctor still wanted to know if I wanted a refill of pain pills. So be careful, work with the pain and take the pills to help yourself heal without pain. But also wean yourself off of them as soon as you can. JMHO!

I'm a quit-tired Pharmacist and am well aware of the addictive properties of the pain med that was prescribed for me. But thanks for sharing. I took two last night before bedtime and only one this morning when I woke up. I can definitely feel the difference and can maintain standing, sitting, walking etc. with minimal pain.

I've been home less than 24 hours and already feeling antsy. The physical therapists don't just want me to sit or lay in bed. So I've taken the 27 steps to the back door, grabbed one piece of firewood in each hand, climbed the 2 steps back into the house and returned the 27 steps to the wood rack. I'm not supposed to lift anything over 15 lbs for 10 days.

Made 5 trips so far.

Tyme, That sounds great. The fact that you can do those things points to a very fast recovery. :thumb:

I do remember that after I woke up in the recovering room and wheeled into my private room, it wasn't an hour before the physical therapists came in and got me out of bed and walking with two people at my side. I couldn't hardly remember my name at that time, but that was their recovery idea. So they really don't like folks to lay there and not get moving as quickly as they can.

So glad you're on the healing side of the operation. :thumb:

Same here after surgery. Bandage covering my entire stomach and 2 nurses came in and sat me up stating it's time to walk. They got me turned and my feet were about a 15" off the floor and remember asking them "what, now you want me to jump!" They did lower the bed to help me get back in. I was about 6 hrs. out of surgery then and still full of tubes.

You are lucky it's so warm this year, or you would need to make a trip every hour!!!

Hee,hee. The inside wood rack holds enough for about 4 to 5 days or so. I have compulsive disorders and like to keep it full.

I had a little bit of a scare last night. I just wasn't feeling right and took my temperature. It was slightly elevated at 100.6? This morning it's back down to 98.6? and I could tell just by how I felt.
I just rode it out as we don't have any acetaminophen in the house and that's all I'm allowed to take right now.
The suture lines and staples provide me with some discomfort but I haven't taken any pain meds yet today. I might have to re-think that decision.
Appetite has not really returned. I asked Mrs.Tyme yesterday to prepare 1 scrambled egg and 1 piece of toast for breakfast. I then took a 3 hour nap later in the afternoon.
Ate a small slice of meatloaf, peas, and fried rice for dinner.
I'm just not hungry but know I need nutrition to fuel my body and aid in the healing process. I know all this takes time and while I have patience when fishing, I don't have patience with being "not well".

Tyme, I think you are doing great. And the fact that you know about meds and the need for nourishment, is a big plus as well. :thumb:

Good to hear you're doing well. Stay off the ice. I had operations on double inguinal hernias in 1985 at the Shouldice Hospital here in Ontario and no complications since. They use local anesthetic and you step off the operating table by yourself. I had left and right sides done a day apart, climbing onto and off the table by myself as they required. If anyone has the option to have their surgery done at Shouldice, I'd recommend it. When I was there, there were patients from all over the world, including middle east millionaires who could afford to go anywhere. According to this Wikipedia article, a disproportionate number of US doctors go there for their own surgeries. - Grandad

Eight days post surgery:
I wore too tight jeans yesterday and that was a mistake. I thought I was putting on my "fat" jeans but they were just my "husky" jeans. Lesson learned.
Woke up this morning feeling pretty darn good. I was even able to sleep on my stomach last night!
No pain pills yet today and I'm beginning to feel somewhat normal. I can stand, sit, and walk with very minimal discomfort.
I guess I'm starting to heal. I'll have the staples removed next Wednesday. It still feels weird when I touch the "zippers" on each leg.
